UPCOMING MEETING - Saturday, August 2, 2008
Our regional program stacks up as another good one with three main presenters: Kadir Nelson, Bob Scanlan, and Andy Strasberg. We will also have an update from Tom Larwin on what’s happening at our San Diego SABR Baseball Research Center (BRC) and a trivia contest by Greg Funk.
Featured Speakers:
Kadir Nelson Kadir began drawing at the age of three, and painting at age ten. He would later submit his paintings to art competitions and win an art scholarship to study at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. Upon graduating with honors, Nelson began his professional career as an artist, publishing his work and receiving commissions from publishers and production studios such as Dreamworks, where he served as a the lead conceptual artist for Steven Spielberg’s “Amistad” and “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron,” Sports Illustrated, Coca-Cola, The United States Postal Service and Major League Baseball, among others. Most recently, Nelson released his authorial debut, WE ARE THE SHIP: The Story of Negro League Baseball (Jump at the Sun/Disney), a New York Times best-selling tribute to the Negro Baseball Leagues which Nelson crafted over a period of almost eight years. Many of his paintings are found in the collections of notable institutions and museums, including the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and the U.S. House of Representatives.
Bob Scanlan Bob is currently handling the Cox Channel 4 post-game show for the Padres and has been on XX radio (AM 1090) on various Padres pre- and post-game shows as well. Bob was a pitcher in the big leagues from 1991-2001, and played in both leagues (Cubs, Astros, Brewers, Expos, Tigers, and Royals). Over the course of 290 games he had a 20-34 career record. In 1992 he saved 14 games for the Cubs and had an earned run average of 2.89, with a 3-6 won-loss record. On his Channel 4 post-game segment he invites questions and gives his "Scanalysis" of the Padres game.
Andy Strasberg "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" is celebrating its 100th anniversary and Andy Strasberg, who co-wrote Baseball's Greatest Hit The Story of Take Me Out to the Ball Game will make a presentation about the song based on the book. Andy is a former Padres exec and now heads up ACME marketing which has provided service to clients such as the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Ozzie Smith. He will present little known facts about the baseball anthem and show video clips of some of the more unusual performances of the song including Liberace, Harpo Marx and Jerry Lee Lewis.
