SABR DAY PROGRAM
Jason McLeod -
Padres, Vice President, Assistant General Manager
McLeod rejoined the Padres on December 4, 2009 when he was named Vice President/Assistant General Manager. Prior to his return in San Diego, McLeod worked for the Boston Red Sox scouting department for the previous seven years. He joined Boston in 2003 and was named Director of Amateur Scouting after the Red Sox World Championship 2004 season. His first draft with Boston produced 2007 AL Rookie of the Year and 2008 AL Most Valuable Player Dustin Pedroia. Baseball America ranked the Red Sox draft among the top five drafts in three of his first four years as Director of Amateur Scouting, including second-best in 2005 and first overall in 2006.
A native of San Diego, McLeod started his front office career as an intern in the Padres baseball operations department in 1994. He went on to hold multiple posts for the Padres through 2003, starting as an assistant in the baseball operations department and then coaching in the minor leagues for three years before returning to the front office as the Assistant Director of Scouting and Player Development. He then served as an area scout in Southern California from 2002-03 before joining the Red Sox.
Born in Hawaii, McLeod grew up in San Diego and attended Rancho Buena Vista High School where he played alongside former Major Leaguer Dave Roberts. He attended Palomar Junior College before being drafted by the Houston Astros in the 44th-round of the 1991 First-Year Player Draft. The right-hander pitched in the minors from 1991-92 before taking his first internship with the Padres.
Following the 2009 season, McLeod was voted the Red Sox Unsung Hero by the Boston Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America. He is the great-grand nephew of Hall of Fame pitcher Carl Hubbell.
