PCL PADRES LANE FIELD

HISTORICAL MARKER

We are making progress to have an historical marker installed near the intersection of Pacific Highway and Broadway in downtown San Diego to commemorate the location of Lane Field, the PCL Padres home from 1936-1957.  We have transmitted a letter to SABR’s Acting Executive Director, John Zajc, requesting the Board’s consideration of financial assistance toward the manufacture of the marker.  The San Diego Unified Port District also has indicated their help with its installation.  Bill Swank has contributed a set of words for the plaque…so, we are getting close.

Aiding our efforts, the first donation has arrived from Jim Fuller former baseball writer for the old San Diego Journal.  He wrote to Bill Swank that…”a Lane Field Plaque is long overdue.”  The size of the marker will be dependent upon the amount of donations received.  If you would like to add your personal contribution to help complete this project then send your donation (any amount will help) payable to “SD SABR” and mail to:

WHITEY WIETELMANN

PADRES BOX SCORE SCRAPBOOK PROJECT

Soon we hope to have another significant addition to our San Diego SABR Baseball Research Center…Bill Swank initiated the project and is nearly complete with the update of the Padres (Major League, not PCL) Box Score Scrapbook Project.  Every Padres game played beginning with their inaugural 1969 season will have the game’s box score in books.  Jane Selvar, supervisor of Special Collections at the San Diego Central Library, told us that she is very enthusiastic about the prospect of receiving the scrapbooks for their Special Collection.

A little background from Bill…”not many people knew that Whitey Wietelmann cut, taped and bound all of the San Diego Padres box scores from 1969 through 1993.  Unfortunately, his scrapbooks were in a state of disrepair at the time of his death earlier this year.  Not wanting to see this unique collection disintegrate, I laminated the pages and made new, matching binders for the first 25 seasons.  I wonder how many major league teams have the box scores of every game they ever played?  My guess is none.”  To make the Padres collection complete, I asked our local SABR members to volunteer to copy the missing years.  The response has been wonderful.  Bob Boynton copied all of the Padres box scores for 1994, 1997 and the first half of 1996.  He is currently working on the second half.  Phil White has done 1995.  Bob Diaz did the second half of 1998.  Andy Aguinaldo has done the first half of 1998, all of 1999 and is working on 2000.  I did 2002.  Now, the only remaining "missing" year is 2001.”

So, thanks to members of our Ted Williams chapter, seven of the eight missing years have been copied.  Do we have a volunteer who will go to the library and copy the box scores from 2001?  If so, your name will go on the spine of the 2001 book.  When 2001 is completed, the entire collection (34 scrapbooks) will be donated to the SABR Baseball Research Center at the Downtown San Diego Library.  This is your opportunity to do some hands-on baseball research.  If we have more than one of you sign up then we can split up the year and lessen the load.  Let Bill know if you are interested by e-mail: wgswank@sgmmail.com.

BASEBALL RELIQUARY

EXHIBIT DUE IN SAN DIEGO IN 2003

Jay Walker received this note from Terry Cannon at Baseball Reliquary: "Just wanted to let you know that I spoke with Vic Cardell again and we set August 2003 as the date for the Baseball Reliquary exhibition at the San Diego (Central) Public Library. We will be using all of their display cases, which should allow us to display many items from our collections.  Although we usually do "thematic" exhibitions, I think for San Diego (since we've never exhibited there before) we'll present "highlights" from the Reliquary's permanent collections.”
