SUMMER REGIONAL MEETING

HIGHLIGHTS

Our summer regional meeting was held on Saturday, August 7th at Petco Park. Our Padres-Chapter liaison Tim Katzman (Padres Director of Corporate Communications) came through and was able to make their Community Room available for our meeting.

The meeting led off with a “Books in Review” presented by member David Kinney. With an ample supply of related stories, he covered these four books:

o        Snyder, Brad, Beyond the Shadow of the Senators. New York, NY: Contemporary Books, 2003. “This is an extraordinarily rich book on the Negro Leagues and the integration of baseball focusing on the Homestead Grays.”

o        Fetter, Henry D., Taking on the Yankees. New York, NY: W. W. Norton & Company, 2003. “An interesting look at how baseball teams have tried to compete with the Yankees from 1903-2003.”

o        Bradford, Rob, Chasing Steinbrenner. Herndon, VA: Brasseys, 2004. “Brand new book that views last season through the eyes of Theo Epstein’s Boston Red Sox and the J.P. Ricciardi’s Toronto Blue Jays. Obviously related to Taking on the Yankees.“

o        Ziegel, Vic and Gulberger, Claus (editors), Summer in the City. New York, NY: Harry N. Abrams, Inc., 2004. “Great, great photographs of New York baseball 1947-1957 from New York Daily News…a wonderful book.

Next up was author and baseball historian, Bill Swank, who presented tidbits from his new book Baseball in San Diego, From Padres to Petco. He also announced that he has another one in the works that will cover the period in San Diego from the 1800s until the NL Padres.

As further noted in the story below, we presented the 2004 Boynton Baseball Research Award to Nathan Hicks. The award was presented by Committee chair Jay Walker. In addition to Jay, serving on this year’s Evaluation Committee were: Anna Newton, Tim Katzman (Padres), Bob Boynton, Vic Cardell, and Jim Esterbrooks (County Schools).

Capping our formal program was a panel discussion on the subject of “Professional Baseball in 2010” moderated by Dan Boyle. Padres management representatives on the panel included: Jeff Kingston, Director, Baseball Operations; Juan Lara, Assistant to the Director of Player development; and Gilly Reckler. It was an interesting and entertaining discussion of baseball from three young professionals involved in various business aspects of the Padres Baseball Club.

The final activity was a thorough behind-the-scenes tour of Petco Park.

2004 BOYNTON BASEBALL RESEARCH AWARD WINNER:

NATHAN HICKS

We are pleased to congratulate Nathan Hicks, 12th grader from Ramona High School, who won our Chapter’s Boynton Baseball Research Award for the 2nd time.  Nathan’s paper entitled: “Ted Williams, The Last .400 Hitter…Ever?”  Nathan impressed members at our summer regional meeting with a presentation on the subject.  He sent us a letter afterwards and commented that “being rewarded for writing on subjects and topics that interest me as a baseball fan is amazing.”

MARK IT DOWN!

NEXT REGIONAL MEETING

With regard to the program we have a commitment from Jim Vitti, author and winner of The ‘Sporting News-SABR Baseball Research Award’ for his outstanding book on the Cubs on Catalina. In addition, we expect another couple of presentations…and are always looking for research presentations. If you have something to offer please reply to this e-mail. And, if you have any subjects or people you would recommend we schedule, please let us know that, too.
