Program: Leading off will be our keynote speaker,
Dick
Freeman, President of the San Diego Padres.
We are
fortunate to have Dick join us and give us the latest in developments for the
2004 Padres, and an update on Petco Park...and he will be available to answer
your questions.
Following
Dick we will have a raffle and several members who will make research
presentations:
·
Matthew
Schugart will speak on “Is Home Field Advantage in the World Series ‘Everything’?”
·
This will be followed by Amy
Essington on her research related to "Integration of the Pacific Coast
League in San Diego, 1948."
·
Complementing her presentation will be Bill Swank who will offer a personal biography of the
late San Diegan, and former PCL Padres player, John Ritchey.
·
Bob
Boynton will also present on “Al Autry: A one-game starter and winner.”
MAX WEST
November 28, 1916-December
31, 2003
Max had a
special connection with San Diego and we had the pleasure and honor of his
participation last March at our special Ted Williams symposium, and then the
next day where he spoke to us at our event dedicating the Lane Field Historical
Marker.
For an
excellent summary of Max’s life and contributions, here is Jack Williams’s
story from the January 7, 2004, San Diego
Union-Tribune:
http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/obituaries/20040107-9999_1m7west.html
His major
league career is contained on this site:
http://www.baseball-reference.com/w/westma02.shtml
As noted in the
obituary, a "memorial" is planned for Max on Sunday, January 11,
2004, at 1:00 p.m. at the site of our Lane Field plaque. Please join us if you can.
HIDDEN BALL TRICKS
Dave Smith, of Retrosheet,
alerted us to some recent contributions from Bill Deane to the Retrosheet website…it now contains a list Bill
compiled of the 190 times that the hidden ball trick was worked
successfully. Go to www.retrosheet.org and check out the "What's
New" section on the home page for a quick link to the Special Lists
page. Bill also has information on
suspected or possible cases of this play that have not been confirmed.
This
addition comes on the heels of their new feature on "lost" home runs
and Dave indicates that more is in the offing.
The next list will probably be a summary of the times we know that a
team batted out of turn. Other new
features will also appear in the next few months, so stay tuned!
SABR BASEBALL RECORDS
COMMITTEE
DECEMBER 2003 NEWSLETTER

Chairman of this Committee, Lyle Spatz, invites you to read the December newsletter of the Baseball Records Committee. It is available on the SABR website

The
December issue, as usual, features many of the records broken or tied in the
season just ended.
HELP FIND MISSING PADRE
CATCHERS!
“Thanks for the Newsletter.
I like to keep up with the SDTW Chapter doings. Could you do me a
favor and pass along the following request to the Chapter.
“I am in the process of
building a "San Diego Padres' Catchers" section on my web site,
similar to the one that I have done for the Cincinnati Reds. [See
http://www.baseballcatchers.com/cincy0.htm
]
“I have created an initial
set of pages that members can view to get an idea of what I am after. These
pages can be seen at
http://www.baseballcatchers.com/sd0.htm
“Also, if a Chapter member
has any other ideas (data perspectives) that they'd like to see as a part of
the "Padre Catchers" section just let me know. I'm always open to
ideas and input.
“My request is for photo
images (electronic files preferred) of the "Head Shot" variety for
each of the 47 catchers that have caught for the Padres. Although I have some
pictures, many of those that I do have are not in a San Diego uniform. I'd like
to have them wearing the SD colors if possible. Because the SD web pages are
just in the initial stages, very few of the catchers' individual pages cannot
be viewed by "clicking on their photo" as stated on the page. Perhaps
a Chapter member is in tight with the Padres organization and can get them to
send me the complete set. The Reds ballclub provided the majority of photos for
their section and I have given source credit to them. I will do the same for
the Padres (or any member who provides photos). The image files should be 500
pixels wide at a minimum (for good display on the web) but can be any size
greater than this.
“The files can be sent as
an email attachment or via snail mail at:
5251 Chestnut Lake
Drive
Jacksonville,
Florida 32258
“Thanks so very much,
Chuck Rosciam

Research
